UDF in Kerala, is it possible that a return to a two-party system will now take place in Kerala?

The UDF’s incredible success in Kerala has brought an end to the ten years of rule enjoyed by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala. However, the emergence of a two-party system in Kerala depends on many factors beyond the control of any one political party or coalition, and therefore, there are many unanswered questions regarding this matter.

Electoral Mandate in Favor of UDF and Incumbent Bashing

The message from the citizens of Kerala to their government, or LDF government (headed by the CPI M) under the leadership of Pinarayi Vijayan, has been unequivocally indicated by the voting results of Kerala Assembly Elections – the CPI M has lost an extraordinary number of votes and has also suffered from large turnout in opposing party’s candidates (UDF), that this mandate gives UDF a mandate against incumbent dictatorships (CPI M) and an opportunity to implement their promised reforms in Kerala.

Has it happened previously? No, in terms of election history in Kerala, the people of Kerala continually and consistently have cast ballots in opposition to one another. The outcome from this recent state election show that the UDF received 46.36% of the total votes cast, and the LDF led by the CPI(M) and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was unable to receive more than 40% of the total votes cast.

Key performance aspects:

UDF crossed the 71 seat majority mark early in the counting process.

Congress and its allies such as IUML did well in their strongholds.

Many LDF ministers lost badly.

A Kerala UDF Landslide represents a brief revival of the bipolar political scene between UDF and LDF, with BJP-NDA playing only a marginal role as a spoiler.

Internal Division and Chief Minister Selection

There were some challenges that arose after this victory. Congress needed to handle the differences among themselves regarding the selection of the Chief Minister. This indicates the presence of serious divisions especially between the Joseph and other factions. It required High Command intervention to solve the problem. Some critics pointed out that this shows Congress’s organizational weakness even when victorious.

Key issues before the new CM:

Bargaining with influential allies.

Meeting election promises despite budgetary constraints.

Setting realistic expectations with such a huge mandate.

Issues Regarding the Management of Allies and Stability of the Alliance

The massive victory of the UDF ensures that parties like the IUML play an indispensable role in the government. IUML has managed to secure many of its contested seats, thus increasing its bargaining power. Other smaller parties will seek key portfolios, which may pose problems in decision-making.

The stability of UDF-led coalitions has always been an issue in the past. The new coalition led by the UDF has 102 seats to its advantage, thus enjoying numbers. However, ideological differences on economic issues, minorities, and development can influence the efficiency of the rule by the governing party. Has a coalition era begun, or has this marked the return to the two-party system of the nation?

Poor Showings from BJP:

An Underperformance by the National PartyOne area where BJP underperformed in this election is in failing to translate its organizational work into securing seats. Although BJP made great efforts to campaign and field prominent candidates, as well as to polarize voters, BJP remained unsuccessful, winning no seats in several estimates. This indicates the weaknesses of BJP’s Hindutva strategy in a state such as Kerala, which is known for consolidated minorities and bipartisanship between the Left and Congress parties. It seems that BJP should think about what went wrong and why BJP could not make any progress over the years, leading to the victory of UDF in areas where BJP expected progress.

 A Governance Test For UDF

It cannot be denied that there are many challenges facing the new UDF government.

Budget Management – Balancing the budget without undermining the social programs.

Development – Creating jobs and investment opportunities to avoid immigration. Social cohesion – Preserving the secular culture of Kerala despite national rifts.

If it succeeds, the UDF may continue its rule for many more years. If it fails, it may be followed by an LDF revival or even a different front altogether.

Kerala’s UDF Victory: Beginning of Something New or Status Quo?

The victory of the UDF in the elections to the Kerala state government is a new dawn for the southern state. However, it is yet to be seen whether any changes will follow. As per The Indian Express’ elaborate report on the subject, the key to success for coalitions in the state lies in their ability to agree on people-oriented agendas.
