The inclusion of Hyderabad to the Indian Union on September 17, 1948 is one of the most important dates in the history of the Deccan area recently. From the standpoint of the Centre, it is the day commemorating the liberation of Hyderabad which symbolizes the process of the unification of India. However, taking into consideration the criticism towards the policy of the BJP-led Centre, the issue remains relevant.

The Government of Telangana has continuously been requesting speedy approval by the Central Government for major infrastructural projects. In 2026, the Chief Minister of Telangana, Revanth Reddy, made several approaches to the Center regarding the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Project, along with ideas for major expansions to the project. By June, the Centre and Telangana reached an agreement to engage SBI Capital Markets in studying the issue further.

But the delays have only served to spark further complaints by leaders of Telangana regarding how little attention is paid by the BJP government at the Centre to the state. Revanth Reddy has been critical of the government for creating problems unnecessarily and dealing with Hyderabad in a manner different from other cities where the Metro project has made more progress. But BJP leaders deny such allegations. Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has said

This conflict illustrates the broader conflict over Hyderabad Liberation Day. It is not possible for national unity to depend solely on ceremony, symbols, and memory. Some people suggest that it has to be seen in terms of infrastructural permissions, financial cooperation, and consultation of states. The BJP may commemorate the 1948 accession of Hyderabad, but its opponents will still ask if the current arrangement between the center and the state does justice to Telangana, the South region of India.
