In Maharashtra’s Nashik, a major investigation is underway involving employees of one of India’s largest IT companies, Tata Consultancy Services. But what exactly is the case and why has it become so controversial?

The Nashik police are currently investigating nine separate FIRs filed across different police stations. All of them involve employees working at the TCSBO facility in Nashik.

The allegations are serious. Complainants have accused certain employees in positions of influence of sexual harassment, coercion, and attempts at religious conversion. Police say the accused may have misused their authority to target vulnerable colleagues over a period stretching back to 2022.

A special investigation team led by assistant police commissioner seep mitk has been formed to probe the case.

This case is that we see the role the accused are in important position in the company as team leadersh and other positions and they have misused their authority or position and uh they have uh both sexually and religiously harassed their co-workers and their juniors. A total of nine accused are there. In this case, the two are lady accused and seven accused are male. In the seven male accused, we see that they are co-acused in almost all the cases. So, it’s like they have formed a group or a gang, organized gang and they are operating in the office. And regarding the two female accused, one accused Nirakan is accused in only one case of religious harassment. The second accused Ashwini Chani was an operations come HR head of the unit and uh she is charged with when the complainant when the victim went to her she has uh uh decided her or discouraged her from uh giving a complaint saying that these things happen and she has sided with the accused.

Now there are various uh questions raised regarding if any uh any extremist organizations are uh in touch with this accused or they are uh behind this or or any sort of funding is is from outside or regarding the international links as uh as news have come in some media and uh we would like to clarify that we are doing a thorough investigation in the entire case and uh we have written to the SID TS NIA and as and when we get some evidence and we will able to come to an conclusion about the same.

But what are the allegations?

The FIR invokes multiple provisions under the Bharatya Nyamita including sexual harassment, rape through deceit, outraging religious sentiments, stalking and intimidation.

In one complaint, a man alleges he was pressured to convert to Islam. He claims he was made to consume beef, recite religious texts, and told that his father’s recovery from paralysis depended only on his conversion.

Other complaints, particularly from women, include allegations of rape, molestation, and coercion under false promises of marriage. There are also claims that religious beliefs were mocked to pressure victims into conversion.

Police say these incidents span multiple years and multiple victims. So far, seven people have been arrested while one accused identified as an HR manager is absconding. Police have formed multiple teams to trace her.

All those named in the FIR have been suspended by the TCS pending investigation and investigators say more arrests are possible.

But how did this case come to light?

Interestingly, the case did not begin with a formal complaint. Police were first alerted by a local political worker after the family of a young woman raised concerns about her sudden behavioral changes. This triggered suspicion and eventually a deeper probe.

What followed was unusual.

According to police sources, teams went undercover inside the office. Officers reportedly worked as housekeeping staff for nearly a month gathering information. A woman police inspector played a key role in speaking to employees.

When the first case had come to us, the victim or the complainant was extremely uh afraid and uh the police had to counsel her and give her that u uh courage that uh we are and support that we are there with uh the complainant and uh after that she registered her case. After that complainant and some other uh some other people from the office they came forward and said that such things are happening with uh other uh uh women employees also and then we sent our lady uh DCP lady officers and our men lady women cops and then they went there in plain closed they interacted with the whole uh office and then they have tried to counel everyone that if anybody has a complaint they should be fearless and come forward forward with it and accordingly the other complaints complainants came forward and FIRS were registered.

The investigation gained momentum after a 23-year-old woman filed a formal complaint alleging rape, blackmail, and repeated harassment inside the workplace.

Police say the evidence gathered during this covert operation led to the registration of nine FIRs between late March and early April.

The accused have strongly denied the allegations. Their lawyers have called the charges flimsy, arguing that voluntary personal choices are being criminalized. One defense argument is that there is no evidence of coercion and that workplace interactions are being misinterpreted.

Meanwhile, the TCS has responded by calling the allegations gravely concerning. The company has launched an internal probe led by senior leadership. Its chief operating officer, Arti Subramanyam, is heading the investigation. All accused employees remain suspended as the inquiry continues.

This case sits at the intersection of multiple sensitive issues. It raises questions about workplace safety and whether internal complaint systems were ignored, the role of consent and coercion in personal and religious choices, and the risk of communal narratives shaping the interpretation of criminal cases. There are also concerns about due process, especially given the scale of allegations and the covert methods used in the investigation.

For now, the investigation is ongoing. The police say they’re still gathering evidence and the courts will ultimately decide the truth.
