Political talks on charges of corruption in the early months of 2026 again came into focus in South India. Public funds and project money are exploited by the leaders for their personal use and benefit. This is most seen again in the leaders and politicians of the BJP. BJP’s double standards on corruption narratives are more concerning when corruption allegations are raised across all parties. Is corruption a principle or a tool for politics?

The pattern of targeting opposition vs internal party silence:

BJP portrayed itself as an anti-corruption party. The leadership often brings up instances of corruption involving opposition parties. The common issues they often highlight are:

  • Dynastic Wealth Creation
  • Unaccounted Assets
  • Abuse of Public Position and Power

But the question arises when such instances are reported within their own ranks; the party remains silenced and often ignored. As it’s a problem of perception. When a party does not take a uniform stance on corruption, it is often viewed as a tool for politics.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s corruption case from Kerala:

The recent Rajeev case, which has been under the spotlight for various reasons related to the irregularities in the declaration of assets and the possible involvement of benami properties of around $200 crore. The main issues related to the case include;

  • Inconsistency in the disclosure of financial information
  • Possible involvement related to benami properties
  • Need for transparent investigation timelines

If the same accusations had been made against the leaders of the opposition party, the reaction of the BJP would have been instant and vitriolic in nature. However, the absence of such a strong reaction lends support to the argument that accountability is not applied in an even fashion.

Karnataka land allegation & mining:

Another notable case in South India relates to the BJP leaders in Karnataka is regarding issues of land and mining. These issues include the Land allocation, favoring between politicians and private mining associations from the public funds. According to a report by Reuters

“These Corruption allegations in Karnataka’s political landscape have, over the years, involved several players, including the BJP, underscoring that no party is above suspicion.”

That highlights the regional politics in South India is not immune to the same phenomenon of selective outrage.

Does selective outrage undermine credibility?

This double standard of the BJP in Corruption Stories is not confined to the political arena.   Many voters believe corruption is caused by politics as a result of an imbalance of power and repression of accountability.  This has led to xenophobia, paranoia, confusion, and fear, which creates a norm in which each person is innocent, but no one shares responsibility for guilt.

A recent survey conducted by Lokniti-CSDS revealed that approximately two out of three (63.8%) of all participants thought they were being used as a pawn to achieve a political objective; however, nearly four out of ten (38.4%) indicated that they do not feel safe within their communities, primarily citing a lack of ownership and support.

Why This Matters for South India

In South India, political awareness and voting percentages are extremely high, with voting percentages even rising above 70 in state legislative assembly elections.

However, the issue of corruption charges against these leaders raises an important question, which is not the question about one political party, but about a system where accountability is only partially present.

The inquiry about the BJP’s Double Standards on Corruption Narratives is not only about a political party; it is a question of the integrity of the system.

If corruption is condemned when it is politically expedient, the entire system fails. Can the people of South India continue to support leaders from both parties who are accused of corruption without full accountability?
