Disabled Grocery Store Owner Found Dead in Nagercoil Jail After Suffering from 19 Injuries; 3 Prison Guards Arrested
NAGERCOIL/KANYAKUMARI, July 15, 2026. A 35-year-old disabled person who is the owner of a grocery store has died in police custody in Nagercoil sub-jail in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. Sabari Varman, who was arrested for the sale of illegal gutka products, was found dead in the early hours of July 13. A postmortem has shown that the deceased had 19 injuries, including a fracture to his disabled right hand, which led to the arrest of three prison guards. This issue has brought up debates about custodial deaths in Tamil Nadu in the wake of new leadership in the state.
The Victim and His Arrest Sabari Varman, who hails from Ethan Kadu, which is close to South Thamaraikulam in the Kanyakumari district, operates a grocery store. The victim is slightly physically challenged in his right hand. The police have confirmed that this was the third arrest in connection with the illicit selling of prohibited tobacco items such as gutka and pan masala. On July 9, 2026, the police arrested him on charges of storing gutka weighing around 200 grams from his shop. After producing the man in front of the magistrate, he was remanded to judicial custody, following which he was kept under custody at the Nagercoil sub-jail.
The police have maintained in their reports that Sabari Varman was in good health during his arrest and remand period. The medical fitness certificate and statement from the judicial magistrate have stated that there were no injuries on his body. In fact, his sister had met him in jail and was informed about his condition.
Sudden Death and Claims by the Family Varman is reported to have suddenly developed health problems on Monday, July 13 at about 12 a.m. in the morning at the sub-jail, and he was taken to the Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital, where he died shortly thereafter, at 6:05 a.m.
His relatives immediately made allegations of torture and beating of their family members in custody. It is claimed that there were several visible injuries on his body and that jail officials beat him to death while ignoring his disability. The eyewitness is reported to have counted around four injuries on the body of the deceased. The family members resorted to blockading of roads (road roko) and demanding an investigation into his death along with demanding postmortem on the body by the doctors from some other government medical college.
The situation became tense as protesters did not believe the first report of the police claiming death due to natural causes, possibly cardiac arrest. It took convincing from the senior police officials, including Kanyakumari Superintendent of Police R. Stalin, to convince the protesters to stop the agitation.

Nineteen injuries have been found on the body of Varman, including abrasions, bruising, and even fracture of his crippled right hand. It is reported that video footage from the prison security cameras recorded an attack made by prison wardens and perhaps other inmates as well.
