The influence of the national politics, especially those which are led by the BJP, has greatly affected Kerala’s election strategy for 2026. Considering the election process, it is clear that the government has concentrated more on issues of majoritarianism and centralization. Consequently, there will be a need for the stakeholders of the state to develop various methods of dealing with the situation. Thus, the state will be operating in an environment that is quite opposite to its developmental paradigm.

Divisive National Politics of the BJP Contradicting Kerala’s Political Culture

One can argue that the BJP’s national politics promote Hindutva at the expense of maintaining a harmonious relationship between states and the central government. The case of Kerala is no different, as its pluralistic society is characterized by peaceful coexistence among Muslims, Hindus, and Christians. The party’s attempts to impose a homogeneous culture to the detriment of progressivism in terms of social services and education in the region contradict the needs of people. The BJP leaders often speak about the political situation in the state of Kerala in relation to its inefficiency in handling important issues.

Sabarimala Temple (2018-2019) case :

After the Supreme Court gave permission to women for entering into the Sabarimala Temple, there were a number of protests that took place. While initially, the BJP welcomed the order, in due course of time, they criticized the court decision, leading to strikes or hartals. There was violence in certain places, too. In 2021 elections, BJP failed to  win a seat with just 11.30% votes.

Union Budget Disregard (2026):

After the Union Minister Suresh Gopi’s promises to provide major infrastructure projects in the state during the previous Union budget season, the recent Union budget left nothing for the state. The social media was flooded with memes related to these unfulfilled promises, which even made it to Frontline magazine reports.

As we see, national politics is more interested in optics than action, resulting in BJP losing credibility.

Mismanagement in the Economy and its Consequences

The economic policies that the BJP government implemented at the national level are creating pressure on the economy of Kerala. The issue of escalating debts is causing trouble for the state. Debts have escalated from ₹1.57 lakh crore in 2016 to ₹4.88 lakh crore by 2025-26 due to inadequate funding from the central government in case of floods and pandemics. (READ MORE)

Problem of Youth Migration: There is youth migration in the millions as more than 2 million Keralites seek jobs overseas, but government schemes lack employment opportunities for them.

Welfare problems: Lack of central subsidies has created financial burdens for the state governments.

In the strategy for the polls in Kerala of 2026, the opposing political parties will focus on these aspects, pointing out that while the national government has been claiming the downfall of the state’s progress, Kerala continues to rank among the top human development indicators.

Role of National Politics in Kerala’s Election Strategy for 2026

National politics will definitely dictate that an active strategy be formulated for the Kerala State Election Strategy for 2026. The LDF and UDF do not want to debate ideologies but concentrate on governance and social welfare. Changes include:

  • Drawing attention to the BJP’s lack of MLAs since 2016.
  • Defusing polarization by emphasizing development initiatives.
  • The areas where BJP is weak are Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur districts.

On the other hand, BJP, to counter this trend, adopts the development approach along with the Hindutva ideology in an implicit way. However, BJP’s performance in elections held in 2021, where it managed 11.30% votes but got no seat at all, shows that there is no attraction for BJP amongst voters.

Opposition Response and Voter Sentiments

The opposition parties are using their strategy of overreach on the national level in their favor. They are labeling BJP government policies as dangers to the federal interests of Kerala, and its social order. The promises made by BJP about the “Vikasita Keralam” look futile in light of real facts like waste management crises under BJP-led companies. The literate voters are questioning the empty promises.

The statistics prove the point that  the vote share for NDA fell back to pre-2016 levels in 2021. BDJS, which is an ally of BJP, saw its vote share fall drastically from 3.93% to 1%.

The Future of Democratic Strength in Kerala

There is more to this story than how the national political scenario affects the poll strategy of Kerala for 2026. The BJP’s centralized approach does not work well in a state that relies on a system of evidence-driven governance rather than rhetoric. While this approach seeks small wins, errors could prove to be too costly. Kerala might yet defy national forces again in favor of its own needs.
