Modi’s Diplomatic Failure could never be any clearer. With the outbreak of a major war in West Asia in February 2026, Pakistan’s position as a mediator was evident, as negotiations were being conducted with all the superpowers around the globe. However, under Modi, India remained silent and irrelevant. The whole idea of the “Vishwa Guru” is completely shattered now.

Any claims for global dominance in Modi’s regime have failed when tested by real geopolitics. In the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, Pakistan became an important actor. India stayed a bystander, which is evident from their foreign policy actions. This is not just diplomacy. This is a defeat.

Dependence of South India on West Asia

South India is the one that is worst off in this situation. States such as Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh depend on the oil produced by the West Asian countries, huge ports, information technology-enabled business activities, and remittances from the Gulf region. Over 9 million Indians working in the Gulf remit as much as $50 billion every year.

Immediate Effect of the War in South India.

The war has brought about instant suffering: Costs of petroleum shooting up: The country depends on imports to meet almost 88- 91 % of its oil requirements. Fifty-four percent of India’s total oil requirements are fulfilled by West Asia, and more than half of them are transported through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently closed.

  • Twofold reduction in remittances: Remittances from Kerala are expected to be reduced by twenty percent during this year. South Indian state households are experiencing a stoppage of their earnings sources.
  • Susceptibility of fisherfolk and traders: Coastal areas and ports, which were previously located for business reasons, are now idle as ships cannot sail.
  • Insecurity of energy supply: Higher costs increase inflation and jeopardize the employment of lakhs of South Indians in the Gulf region.

An Ignored Warning from The Past.

This is not the first time Modi’s diplomatic relations have flopped. During the US-Iran tensions in 2019-2020, India once again found itself marginalized amid skyrocketing oil prices and fluctuating remittances. The southern parts of India were affected in the same manner, with increased fuel prices and uncertainty in the economy.

Modi’s diplomatic failure happened due to the assassination of General Qasim Soleimani of Iran in January 2020. Despite the involvement of global powers in negotiation and mediation for easing the tension, Modi-led India took a backseat and played no active diplomatic role despite the country’s high stake in the Middle East region.

The impact of the event on South India was swift and harsh:

  • There is a rise in oil prices in the global market; Brent crude oil price experienced a rise of 4 percent in a few days.
  • The prices of petrol and diesel have become very high in India. Fuel prices were affected directly, increasing the costs of logistics and transportation for households.
  • Uncertainty in the remittance of workers from Gulf countries was likely to affect millions of households, depending on money transfers from Gulf countries.
  • Strategic problems between India and Iran around the Hormuz Strait led to the negative impact of economic activities on the ports of southern India.

However, Modi chose diplomacy and was unsuccessful in doing so. Indeed, Modi’s diplomatic failures repeat themselves consistently, and each time India finds itself in unfavorable economic conditions. India’s Economy in 2026: Impact of Modi’s Diplomatic Failures

India’s Global Position at Risk.

As per a recent report published in The Indian Express, the West Asia war is exacerbating India’s growing account deficit and growth rate due to increasing import expenses and remittance instability.

Modi’s diplomatic debacle is no longer a national disgrace but an attack on the very survival of South India. The part of India that drives the country economically with business, technology, and diligent laborers from the Gulf has been relegated to the sidelines during this time of crisis. South India does not only have to pay for Modi’s mistakes.

It has to pay for his pride and arrogance. “Vishwa Guru” speeches are meaningless when Modi is unable to provide solutions to the problems in the West. If Modi fails in West Asia, then he fails South India and India itself.
